The house had been burnt out a long time ago and there are plants growing all over it. Marianne finds Philip’s axe so she knows she met him there. As she makes her way back through the wood she comes across the grave again. It, too, is overgrown with plants. After she reads the inscription, she takes the train back to her new life.
