Did you think gap years are just for students? They were. But not now. More and more working people are taking gap years. They are leaving work for a year and doing things they have wanted to do for a long time. Recently I spoke to Jonathan, a former copywriter for an advertising agency in London, who took a gap year.

Jonathan: When I was thirty I suddenly realised I had been working all my life. I don’t mean working for a living exactly. I mean I had been at school for thirteen years, then gone straight to university. After I graduated, I found a job. I was thirty and I had never really done anything for myself. I had just broken up with my girlfriend – she wanted to get married and I didn’t. I do one day. I would like children, but not yet. I decided then that I would give up my job and travel to all the places I had always dreamed about. I did lots of overtime and in ten months I had the money. I bought a round-the-world air ticket and left London. It was a fantastic feeling.
