Visit Barcelona!

Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain. It is not as big as Madrid, but it is thought by many people to be the liveliest and most cosmopolitan of Spain’s cities. The harbour area is becoming as famous as San Francisco’s and Sydney’s. More people visited Barcelona in 2002 than any other Spanish city.

Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and it has its own language – Catalan. Most Catalans speak Spanish as well as Catalan. However, Catalan is considered to be more difficult to speak. But don’t worry, you can usually find someone who speaks English, French or German.

What to do in Barcelona

A ‘must see’ is the Sagrada Familia. This church, designed by Gaudi, is the most famous building in Barcelona.

For music-lovers, Barcelona has one of the biggest opera houses in the world. Only the Sydney Opera House is bigger.

If you are going with children, don’t miss the aquarium, which has some really wonderful fish. It’s not the cheapest place to go, but the kids will love it.

If you get hungry, you can choose from Catalan or Spanish food or food from further away – North Africa. Most restaurants have a fixed, daily menu. Prices range from € 6–12. This is cheaper than most modern capital cities. The least expensive places to eat are tapas bars. They serve snacks and drinks. Going to a tapas bar is one of the loveliest ways to spend an hour or two.

And the weather…

Barcelona enjoys a Mediterranean climate. The average temperature is 15°C in winter and 24°C in summer. The coldest months are usually December and January; the hottest are July and August.
