Grammar: Linking words (Conectivos)

Os conectivos são usados para unir orações.

1 because

Usamos because para expressar a razão de alguma coisa.

She needs a taxi to the airport because the hotel bus is full.
I want to check out now because I leave early in the morning.
She takes the train to work because she doesn’t like to drive in traffic.

2 or

Usamos or para indicar que existe uma alternativa.

Would you like coffee or tea?
I want a room with a shower or a bath.
She wants to go to the cinema or a concert.

3 although

Although significa “apesar de”.

Although it’s very difficult, she enjoys learning English.
Although my car is old, it runs really well.
They are happy although they are poor.

GUEST: I’d like to check out, please. Do you have my bill? It’s room 405.

RECEPTIONIST: Here you are. Could you check it, please?

GUEST: This seems OK. Just a minute. It says I had a double room, but I booked a single.

RECEPTIONIST: Let’s have a look. Ah yes. We didn’t have a single room. So we gave you a double although we only charged you the single rate.

GUEST: Oh good, thank you. Oh and it says I made three telephone calls at
35 euros each. That’s not right because I only made one international call and that was on the first evening.

RECEPTIONIST: Don’t worry, I’ll check that for you. Is there anything else?

GUEST: Well it doesn’t say I used anything from the mini-bar although I had three bottles of water. You know, the small size.

RECEPTIONIST: Oh, we don’t charge for water.

GUEST: Great. Well, apart from the calls I think it’s OK.

RECEPTIONIST: Good. Could you wait while I check with the manager about the call charges or do you want to sit in the bar?

GUEST: I’ll wait here. Oh, and could you order me a taxi to the airport, please?

RECEPTIONIST: Yes, of course, Miss Perrera. Do you need someone to get your bags?

GUEST: That’s all right. I brought them down myself.

RECEPTIONIST: Well, I hope you’ve enjoyed your stay with us.

GUEST: I have very much, thank you.

RECEPTIONIST: Perhaps you’ll come back another time?

GUEST: I’d love to. Actually, this is one of the best hotels I’ve stayed in.

RECEPTIONIST: Thank you. Right. I won’t be a moment.
