A (ou an antes de palavras iniciadas pelas vogais a, e, i, o, u) é usado com substantivo ou locução substantiva que designa alguma coisa que não é específica ou que não foi mencionada anteriormente.

Também é usado para indicar um emprego, classe ou categoria.

A e an não são usados com substantivos no plural.

Artigo definido: the

The é usado com um substantivo que designa alguma coisa / alguém conhecido ou específico.

  • The tall man in the photo is my father.
  • He’s the director of our company.

The pode ser usado com substantivos no plural.

  • I like the parks in London.
  • The roads are very busy at five o’clock.

Atenção a expressões cristalizadas, como estas:

  • I hate going to the dentist / the doctor.
  • Let’s go to the cinema / the theatre.
  • She’s at school / university.
  • My mother is ill. She’s in hospital.
